Madikwe Game Reserve

MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve, established in 1991, is a premier safari destination offering an exclusive and accessible wilderness experience. As one of South Africa’s largest game reserves, it spans over 750 square kilometers of diverse terrain, including rocky hills, savannah grasslands, and seasonal wetlands. It is famously malaria-free and located within a four to five-hour drive from Johannesburg, making it a convenient starting or ending point for a South African holiday. A key feature of its exclusivity is that day visitors are not permitted, ensuring game drives are intimate and undisturbed.

A safari at Madikwe revolves around expertly guided wildlife viewing, with the reserve supporting an impressive array of species. It is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) as well as other sought-after animals like cheetah and the highly endangered African wild dog. Typical itineraries include two daily game drives—at dawn and dusk—to observe animals during their most active periods. Some lodges also offer guided bush walks for a closer look at the smaller flora and fauna. The best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry winter months from May to September, when animals congregate around water sources.

Visitors are accommodated in a variety of exclusive, all-inclusive lodges that define the Madikwe experience. These range from rustic eco-bush camps to ultra-luxurious private lodges. High-end options like Mateya Safari Lodge or Madikwe Hills provide exceptional service, gourmet dining, and private decks overlooking waterholes. Many properties are family-friendly, offering special programs for children, while others cater to couples seeking a romantic retreat. Between game drives, guests can relax at their lodge, enjoy pool decks, or share stories under spectacular night skies.
